The drive itself is comfortable. The cost is the collection loop at the start, which can add forty minutes to an hour while the bus fills. If your hotel is collected last you barely notice; first, and you sit through the whole circuit.

The middle option and, for most guests, the best value. A nine or eleven-seat van with wide reclining seats, collecting from fewer points than a shuttle and sometimes direct from your hotel.

You get most of the comfort of a private car for a fraction of the price difference. For two people who want a pleasant drive without paying for exclusivity, this is what we book most often.

This is what we recommend for families with young children, guests with mobility considerations, and anyone with an early flight the day they disembark. The flexibility matters most on the return, when you can leave the harbour the moment you are ready rather than waiting for a full vehicle.

There is a rail connection towards Halong, but the schedule and station locations make it slower and less convenient than the road for almost every cruise itinerary. It is an interesting journey rather than a practical transfer.

Seaplane transfers have operated at various points and offer a genuinely spectacular aerial view of the karsts. They are expensive, weather-dependent and limited in capacity. If you are curious, ask whether they are running for your dates before building an itinerary around one — and always keep a road transfer as the fallback.

This is the detail most often missed. Halong has several departure points and they are not close together. Tuan Chau and Halong International Cruise Port serve the classic Halong Bay routes, Got serves many Lan Ha cruises, and Hon Gai serves Bai Tu Long.

Confirm your harbour when you book the transfer, not the night before. A driver briefed for the wrong port is the single most common cause of a stressful morning.

Boarding is typically between midday and 12:30, which means leaving Hanoi around 08:00 to 08:30. Shuttles collect earlier to allow for the pickup loop. On the return you disembark late morning and reach Hanoi mid-afternoon.

The mistake we see most often is booking an international flight for the same evening you disembark. It usually works, but a delayed disembarkation or heavy traffic removes your margin entirely. One buffer night in Hanoi costs far less than a missed flight.

If your hotel sits down a narrow Old Quarter lane, the vehicle may not reach the door and your pickup point becomes the nearest corner. Ask exactly where, and photograph the spot the evening before if you are unsure.

Also confirm whether your package includes the transfer one-way or round-trip, and get a phone number that reaches a person on the day rather than an inbox. Those two details prevent most of the transfer problems we hear about.
