Article brief
Two stunning bays, two very different vibes. A detailed, honest comparison of scenery, crowds, activities, departure points and price so you can choose with confidence.
Halong Bay is the world-famous icon — the name on every Vietnam bucket list and the seascape you have almost certainly seen on a postcard. Just to the south lies Lan Ha Bay, sharing the very same geology of emerald water and limestone towers, yet carrying a fraction of the boat traffic. They sit side by side, divided only by an invisible administrative line, but the experience of cruising each one can feel surprisingly different.
The honest answer to "which is better" is that neither bay is objectively superior — they simply suit different travellers and different trips. This guide walks through scenery, crowds, the specific sights, the activities on offer, where each one departs from and how prices compare, so by the end you will know exactly which bay matches the holiday you have in mind.

The same seascape, a different atmosphere
Quiet emerald waters of Lan Ha Bay dotted with limestone islands
Both bays belong to the same UNESCO-protected karst landscape, so the raw scenery — thousands of forested limestone pillars rising sheer from jade-green water — is genuinely comparable. Photographers will find dramatic compositions in either place.
Where they diverge is mood. Central Halong Bay is grand, busy and theatrical, with large cruise ships gathering at the headline caves and a real sense of occasion. Lan Ha feels softer and greener, its waters speckled with small floating fish farms and tiny crescent beaches, and far fewer boats sharing the view. If your mental image of the trip is peaceful and uncrowded, Lan Ha will feel closer to that fantasy; if you want the iconic, unmistakable Halong panorama, the central bay delivers it.

Crowds and the sense of space
This is the single biggest practical difference. Central Halong Bay receives the lion's share of visitors, and at peak times the most famous stops — Sung Sot Cave especially — can be busy, with several boats arriving at once. It rarely spoils the beauty, but it does change the rhythm.
Lan Ha Bay has a daily cap on boat numbers and a more dispersed set of anchorages, so kayaking spots and swimming beaches often feel close to private. Travellers who prize tranquillity, or who have visited other crowded landmarks in Asia and want something calmer, consistently rate Lan Ha higher for atmosphere.

The signature sights in each bay
Boats anchored near the famous caves of central Halong Bay
Central Halong Bay holds the celebrity landmarks: the vast twin chambers of Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, the 400-step hilltop panorama at Titop Island, the kayak-through arch of Luon Cave and the ornate formations of Thien Cung and Dau Go caves. These are the images most people travel to see in person.
Lan Ha's highlights are quieter and more active: the atmospheric Dark and Bright Cave explored by bamboo boat, the tide-dependent beaches of Ba Trai Dao, the sheltered "Frog Pond" of Ao Ech for easy kayaking, and gentle cycling through Viet Hai village inside Cat Ba National Park. It trades famous names for hidden corners.

Activities and how active you want to be
If your ideal day is relaxed sightseeing — visiting a great cave, climbing to a viewpoint, then returning to the sun deck — central Halong is perfectly suited. Its highlights are mostly short, gentle excursions.
Lan Ha rewards travellers who want to be on or in the water. Calm, protected lagoons make it one of the best places in the region to kayak, the swimming beaches are quieter, and the proximity to Cat Ba Island opens up cycling, hiking and rock-climbing for the adventurous. Families with energetic teenagers and active couples often prefer it for this reason.

Getting there: harbours and transfer time
Central Halong cruises depart mainly from Tuan Chau Marina, around 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Hanoi via the expressway. It is the most established route with the widest choice of vessels at every price point.
Lan Ha Bay cruises usually leave from Got Harbour, also reachable in roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. Some itineraries combine a stay on Cat Ba Island. Transfer times are broadly similar, so the harbour is rarely the deciding factor — though it is worth confirming your exact pick-up point when you book.

Price and choice of boats
Because central Halong Bay has the largest fleet, it offers the broadest spread of prices — from budget day boats to flagship five-star ships with infinity pools. If you are hunting for a specific style or a particular deal, the sheer choice here works in your favour.
Lan Ha's fleet is smaller and skews towards boutique and mid-to-upper-range vessels, which suits its quieter positioning. Prices are broadly comparable for similar standards; you are paying for a calmer experience rather than a premium on the scenery itself.

Choose Halong Bay if…
It is your first visit and you want the classic, bucket-list experience with the most famous caves and viewpoints. You like the buzz and grandeur of a major destination. You want the widest possible choice of cruise ships and price points, including the largest luxury vessels. You are happy to share the headline sights with other boats in exchange for seeing the icons in person.

Choose Lan Ha Bay if…
You value peace, space and a more intimate atmosphere over famous names. You love being active — kayaking quiet lagoons, swimming off uncrowded beaches, cycling and hiking on Cat Ba Island. You have seen the standard Halong photos and want something that feels a little more your own. You are returning to the region and want a different, quieter perspective on the same magnificent seascape.

The best of both: combine them
You do not always have to choose. Longer 3-day, 2-night itineraries frequently sail a route that takes in both central Halong and the quieter waters of Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long, giving you the iconic landmarks on one day and serene, crowd-free kayaking on the next.
If your schedule allows the extra night, this is the option we most often recommend to first-time visitors who cannot decide — you genuinely get the best of both bays. Tell our local team your dates and travel style and we will match you with the route that fits.
