How to read cruise reviews properly
Volume matters more than average, and the middle reviews tell you most.
Reviews are the most useful research tool for a Halong Bay cruise and the easiest to misread. A boat with a 9.6 average can disappoint, while an 8.8 can be exactly right for you. The number alone carries very little information.
Here is how we actually read a boat's review history when deciding whether to list it.
Volume before average
A 9.5 built from twenty reviews is statistically fragile. A 9.0 from five hundred is a far stronger signal, because sustaining that across hundreds of ordinary trips is genuinely hard. Treat fewer than fifty reviews as indicative rather than reliable.
Check the dates, not just the scores
Boats change. They get refitted, change management, or quietly decline. A five-star review from 2019 describes a boat that may no longer exist in that form.
- Sort by most recent and read the last six months first
- Recent reviews weaker than the average usually mean new crew or deferred maintenance
- Recent reviews stronger than the average usually mean a refit the score has not caught up with
Read the three and four-star reviews
Five-star reviews mostly say the same few things. One-star reviews are often about something outside the boat's control. The middle band is where guests write the useful detail — that the food was good but repetitive across two nights, or that the balcony is smaller than the photographs suggest.

Review scores and guest comments shown on this site come from each boat's own listing data, and we say so. Where a vessel has no reviews yet, we leave the section off entirely rather than filling it with samples.
