Halong Bay travel guide
Your complete Halong Bay planning guide
Halong Bay is easy to reach and rewarding to plan well. This guide covers the essentials: the best time to visit, how to get from Hanoi, what to pack, and how a typical cruise day unfolds — so you arrive relaxed and ready.

When to go
Halong Bay sails all year. October to April is cool, dry and sunny — the most popular window. May to September is warm and green, best for swimming, with occasional short summer showers. Sailings can be paused briefly during storms for safety; our team tracks conditions and re-books when needed.
Getting there from Hanoi
Most cruises depart from Halong or Tuan Chau (about 2.5 hours from Hanoi via the new expressway) or from Got/Cai Rong for Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long. Shared shuttles, private cars and limousine vans are all available — we arrange door-to-door transfers with every cruise.
What to pack
- Light, comfortable clothing and a swimsuit.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
- A light jacket for evenings on deck (Oct–Mar).
- Trainers for cave steps and kayaking, plus any personal medication.

A typical cruise day
Overnight cruises usually board around midday with lunch as you sail into the bay, followed by an afternoon activity — a cave, a beach or kayaking. Sunset brings a cooking demo or happy hour on the sundeck, then dinner. The next morning offers Tai Chi at sunrise, a lighter activity and brunch before returning to the harbour.
