Getting to the bay

Hanoi to Halong, handled

The drive is straightforward. What catches people out is the logistics at each end.

Since the expressway opened, Hanoi to Halong takes roughly two and a half hours instead of the four it once did. That single change is why one-night cruises now work comfortably, and why the transfer decision is about comfort rather than endurance.

What still causes problems is not the road but the detail at each end: which harbour, what time, and where exactly a vehicle can reach you.

Which harbour are you actually going to?

Halong has several departure points and they are not close together. Tuan Chau and Halong International Cruise Port serve the classic routes, Got serves many Lan Ha cruises, and Hon Gai serves Bai Tu Long. A driver briefed for the wrong port is the most common cause of a stressful morning.

Timing that works

Boarding is usually midday to 12:30, so leave Hanoi around 08:00 to 08:30
