How many nights do I need?
Overnight cruise anchored among the karsts of Halong Bay
Most travellers choose a 2-day, 1-night cruise, which comfortably covers the highlights with one magical night on the water. If you have the time, a 3-day, 2-night itinerary reaches quieter areas and feels far more relaxed. A day cruise works only if you are extremely short on time, as you miss sunset and sunrise — the bay at its most beautiful.

Are the cabins comfortable?
Yes. Even mid-range cabins are en-suite, air-conditioned and well kept, and most have a window or private balcony with sea views. Luxury vessels add features like marble bathrooms, king beds and butler service. Space is naturally more compact than a hotel room, but you spend little time in the cabin given everything happening on deck.

Will I get seasick?
It is unlikely. The bay is sheltered by thousands of islands, so the water is remarkably calm and the boats barely move at anchor overnight. If you are particularly sensitive, bring motion-sickness tablets for the short stretches of more open water, but the vast majority of guests feel perfectly fine.
Section
Is there wifi, and should I tip?
Most cruises offer wifi near the harbour and in some common areas, though it weakens as you sail deeper into the bay — embrace the chance to disconnect. Tipping is not compulsory but is genuinely appreciated; a modest amount for the crew and your guide at the end of the trip is customary, and many boats provide a shared tip box.
Section
Is it safe, and is it suitable for children or older travellers?
Cruising Halong Bay is very safe with a reputable operator: vessels carry life jackets, follow maritime safety rules, and sailings are suspended in genuinely bad weather. Activities are optional and gentle, making cruises suitable for families with children and for older travellers alike. Mention any mobility needs or young children when booking so we can recommend the right boat and cabin.

What is included, and how far ahead should I book?
Overnight cruise fares typically include your cabin, all meals, activities like kayaking and the cave or island visits, and an English-speaking guide. Drinks, the Hanoi transfer and tips are usually extra — always check the inclusions before booking.
For the best vessels and cabins, book two to six weeks ahead in peak autumn and summer, and earlier around major holidays such as Tet. Booking direct with us secures the local price and free cancellation up to seven days before departure.
