Booking a Halong Bay Cruise: What to Check Before You Pay

Get the inclusions in writing before paying, not after. The four lines that matter most are the transfer, drinks, activities and the entrance or environmental fees. Everything else is usually standard.

• Is the round-trip transfer from Hanoi included, and is it private or shared?

• Are drinks charged, and is there a bar tab settled at the end?

• Which activities are included, and are any subject to a local fee?

• Is there a peak-date or holiday surcharge on my chosen dates?

Booking a "Balcony Suite" reserves a category, not a specific room. Deck and position are usually assigned closer to departure based on availability. If deck matters to you — for views, stairs or motion sickness — say so at booking and ask for it to be noted on the reservation.

The same applies to bed configuration. A cabin listed as "double or twin" needs an instruction, otherwise you get whatever the housekeeping team set up last. Couples occasionally arrive to two single beds for exactly this reason.

The usual structure is roughly 20% to hold the cabin, balance due before or on the cruise day. Make sure you know which currency you are charged in, whether a card fee applies, and exactly when the balance falls due.

You should receive an e-confirmation and a voucher after payment. Check that the voucher shows your name spelled as on your passport, the correct date, the boat name and the cabin category. Errors are easy to fix a week out and awkward to fix at the harbour.

Halong is roughly two and a half hours from Hanoi on the expressway. A shared shuttle is cheapest but collects from several hotels, which adds time at the start. A limousine van is the middle option. A private car is the most flexible and the one we recommend for families and anyone with an early flight the following day.

Confirm the pickup window, the exact pickup point, and who to contact if the driver is late. If your hotel sits in a narrow Old Quarter lane, the meeting point may be the corner rather than the door — worth knowing before the morning.

Boarding is typically between midday and 12:30, and disembarkation on a 2D1N cruise is late morning. Add the transfer at each end and a one-night cruise occupies two substantial parts of two days.

If you land in Hanoi in the morning and hope to cruise the same day, that is possible but tight and leaves no margin for a delayed flight. On the return side, avoid booking an international departure the same afternoon you disembark. One buffer night in Hanoi removes almost all of the risk.

These are two separate policies and people frequently conflate them. Standard cancellation covers you changing your mind, with escalating charges as departure approaches. The weather clause covers the authority suspending sailings, which is outside anyone's control.

Ask specifically what happens in the second case: alternative date, credit, or refund. A clear answer is a good sign about the operator generally.

Bring your passport — it is required at check-in for the manifest, and a photograph is not always accepted. Pack an overnight bag and leave the large suitcase at your Hanoi hotel; most hotels store luggage free and cabins have limited space.
